I grew up in Miami, graduated from Pace High School in 1970, and went to college at the University of South Florida. After that, I taught high school in Florida for a few years before going to graduate school at Florida State University. I have taught English at Southern Polytechnic State since 1989.
I am happily married to my favorite librarian, Shawn Tonner, a former Nova Scotian, with whom I have two healthy, smart, and musical sons. Among my hobbies are long-distance running and classical music.
