Misty York came to Southern Poly in fall 2010. She holds an M.A. in Communication from Western Kentucky University, and a B.S. in Speech from Bradley University. Her master's thesis focused on women's rhetorical strategies in computer-mediated contexts. For this and other work, she received the Graduate Research Award in Communication from WKU.
Professionally, she has worked in sales, administration, and public relations. But her passion lies in training people to become more effective speakers.
She has mentored hundreds of students, ranging from high school speech competitors
to adult professionals. A one-time college competitor herself, she achieved national
recognition in Extemporaneous Speaking, After Dinner Speaking and Duo Interpretation.
Her students have reached the highest levels of state and national success; a few
have even gone on to lead their own programs.
Currently, Misty serves as Coordinator of Forensics for the SPSU Speech Team, while teaching courses including Public Speaking; Business Communication; and Media,
Culture, and Society.
She lives in Marietta with her computer-programmer husband Doug. They pass their precious
time together enjoying sports, sci-fi & fantasy, video games, and delicious meals.
